Educator, Theatre Artist, Oral Historian, Journalist, and Writer

MY PROCESS

I take an interdisciplinary approach to storytelling

My storytelling skill set is interdisciplinary and combines oral history, theatre and performance skills, playwriting, journalism, improvisation and memoir. Individuals and organizations have differing needs for story sharing and public speaking.
It's rarely one size fits all.  No matter how you prefer to create and share stories, my practice makes space for a multitude of storytelling modalities in an environment that is respectful and caring.

ABOUT ME

What's My Story?

I am an award-winning educator, artist, writer, jouralist, and nonprofit leader.  I've collaborated with arts organizations, colleges and universities, nonprofits, schools, and individuals throughout the US. I teach narrative storytelling and public speaking through oral history, theatre, journalism, memoir, and creative writing. My storytelling consulting work focuses on social justice, community building, articulating cultural impact, public performance,  and gathering and celebrating personal and family stories.

I am a member of the UNtraining, supporting white-identified people in developing the required skills to be in solidarity with targeted communities working for our collective liberation from all forms of oppression.

TESTIMONIAL
A few words from clients and collaborative partners.
"Cliff Mayotte is an extraordinary person to work alongside. His rare combination of intelligence and deep empathy has always ensured that our projects together are both productive and fun. Cliff is brilliant and giving, hard-working and creative—a tremendous asset anywhere, really."
Amanda Uhle - publisher & executive director, McSweeney's

"For the last seven years, Cliff has collaborated with our teachers and librarians on student oral history projects. His teaching experience is evident in the way he listens. Cliff is attuned to the rhythm of the classroom, pays close attention to the changing needs of students and teachers, and instinctively adjusts his teaching plans to ensure the success of a particular project."
Brad Williston - Supervisor, San Francisco Unified School District Libraries

"Cliff is easy to work with, open to new ideas and flexible in his approach. I can highly recommend him as a Director, Creative, Teacher and colleague." Emily Klion - Executive Director - San Francisco Youth Theatre

"Cliff worked with us for several years at UCSF/GBHI. We have a very broad and diverse group of fellows from clinicians to artists to health economists, and Cliff came in and was able to manage and organize some of the best and most winning courses and workshops year after year." Mindy M. Curriculum Designer– Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI)

"Cliff has made a profound impact on me as a teacher and person. He wants to learn about people, he is compassionate, and he has always been incredibly kind and generous. He is extremely knowledgeable about education and oral histories, but his impact came with his ability to put those values into practice." Chris W. English Teacher – Amos Alonzo Stagg High School
